As a Hatchery Technician, you will play a key role in the cultivation and care of oyster larvae and seed, helping ensure strong healthy production from the very start

• Maintain and Monitor Oyster larvae and juvenile stocks
• Assist with spawning,feeding and tank management
• Monitor water quality and hatchery Systems, clean and maintain equipment and facilities
• Record data and support daily hatchery

Job Posting: Fisheries Biologist

 

Job Description:

The role combines at-sea survey work on NOAA vessels with lab work identifying, sorting, and measuring invertebrate zooplankton from SEAMAP samples, along with data entry and QA/QC.

Job Qualifications:

The ideal candidate has an MS in marine science or a related field, or a BS with three years of relevant experience, and hands-on experience identifying Gulf zooplankton. The position is on-site in Pascagoula with a starting salary of $50,000, plus full benefits.

Job Posting: IMLS Scholar- Bear Research

Job Description:

The IMLS Scholar position offers an exceptional, immersive training opportunity for ambitious early-career scientists who are driven to excel in conservation science and wildlife research. The successful candidate will be instrumental in achieving the goals of an IMLS grant-funded project which aims to support the efforts of CREW’s Polar Bear Signature Project (https://cincinnatizoo.org/conservation/crew/polar-bear/). Current activities focus on developing and validating physiological monitoring tools and techniques that will both improve management of zoo bears and enhance conservation of wild bear species. The successful candidate will work alongside and be mentored by CREW scientists (primarily Dr. Liz Brammer-Robbins, Dr. Erin Curry, and Brandon Edwards) focusing on sloth bear fecal hormone analysis and assisting with extracellular vesicle protein analysis for pregnancy detection in a model species. Scholars will receive rigorous training in laboratory techniques, physiological monitoring methods, and cutting-edge research approaches. Training may be tailored to the individual’s skillset and aptitude, as well as current project goals. Although CREW is located on the grounds of the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, the duties associated with this role will be performed primarily in a laboratory or at a computer, with minimal direct animal interactions.

Job Responsibilities:

• Process fecal, blood,urine, and other biological samples with precision and accuracy
• Conduct steroid hormone extractions and perform hormone assays (EIAs).
• Conduct scientific literature reviews to support new and ongoing research
• Maintain sample inventories and ensure proper data management
• Support general laboratory operations, including equipment upkeep and cleanliness
• Participate in additional research or operational task as needed
• Participate in a week-long cross-training experience at a partnering zoological research facility to broaden professional exposure to wildlife studies. (Must be willing to travel)

Job Qualifications: This fellowship-style opportunity is open to recent graduates and graduate students pursuing a career in wildlife biology, conservation, or endangered species research. Candidates from underrepresented groups and first-generation college graduates are strongly encouraged to apply.

Required:

• Bachelor of Science degree in a related field, such as biology, animal science, zoology, or wildlife conservation;
• Completed coursework in the areas of physiology, reproduction, and/or endocrinology;
• Eager to learn with an outstanding work ethic and passionate about pursuing a career in wildlife conservation;
• Extremely detail-oriented and organized;
• Able to multi-task, work independently and anticipate project needs;
• Should be comfortable working with fecal samples on a regular basis;
• Must be competent with Microsoft Excel and Word;
• Prompt and reliable in the areas of attendance and performance;
• Able to work well and communicate effectively with CREW scientists, zoo staff, interns, volunteers, students, and the general public;
• Available and willing to commit to the duration of the internship.

Job Posting: Gulf Permit Tracker Coordinator

 

Job Description: 

The Gulf Permit Tracker Coordinator is a new Healthy Gulf position. They will be responsible for launching the new Gulf Permit Tracker web application, which will allow an easy way for the public to find and take action on environmental permits in their region of Louisiana. It will also allow community partners to utilize other mechanisms to let their neighbors know about polluting companies in the area. The Coordinator will work with partner organizations and staff to fully utilize the tracker, while engaging with the Senior Policy Director and contractors on how the tool is being used and how to improve it.

 

Job Responsibilities:

• Work with community and organizational partners to support their use of the Gulf Permit Tracker 
• Learn and become an expert in the Gulf Permit Tracker
• Outreach to Healthy Gulf members and affected communities to mobilize them to submit comments, attend hearings or meetings, and act as standing witnesses
• Review environmental permits including air, water, wetland, and injection well permits in Louisiana
• Working with staff and partner organizations to troubleshoot any issues that might reveal themselves with the Gulf Permit Tracker
• Support other staff to use the Gulf Permit Tracker in their campaigns
• Work with contractors to address new functionality, bugs, and improvements to the Gulf Permit Tracker tool
• Work with staff and partners in order to transform web tools into community power
• Track how the Gulf Permit Tracker is being used and how it improved public participation in the public comment process in Louisiana
• Work with partners to organize trainings, convenings, and presentations
• Utilize our advocacy software, social media, and website to mobilize our grassroots supporters to take action, coordinated through the Communications Director
• Work with local partners to identify emerging coastal issues that need to be addressed
• Assist Healthy Gulf staff with fundraising efforts including, but not limited to grant applications, grant reports, and acting as a Healthy Gulf representative at fundraising events
• Participate with and contribute to Healthy Gulf’s continuing diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice journey
• Other duties as assigned

Job Qualifications:

• At least three years experience in the environmental/social justice field
• Demonstrated ability to work with community and organizational partners
• Experience managing relationships with diverse partners and stakeholders.with the ability to navigate difficult interpersonal situations
• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and communicate about computer/web based applications (programming ability not required)
• Passion for bringing technology to communities that will help them fight polluters in their areas
• Experience working alongside diverse communities
• Ability to express patience when working with individuals that have difficulty using computer-based applications
• Experience working and living in Gulf Communities
• Knowledge and curiosity regarding different environmental issues impacting Louisiana and the Gulf States, including air pollution, water pollution, and wetland destruction
• Self-motivated, well organized, attentive to details, and focused 
• Commitment to racial justice, anti-racism, and Healthy Gulf’s values
• Experience working in a team and with external partners to develop and implement joint strategies
• Proficiency with Microsoft 365, Google Workplace, and Zoom
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
• Candidate must have a valid driver’s license
